“The scenic beauty of the Langeberge Mountain Range as seen from the N2 between Albertinia and Mossel Bay, South Africa…”
Painting done on 26 July 2023.
We often traverse this stretch of the N2 and the beauty of the scene on one of these trips demanded some attention in oil on a canvas sheet …
A typical winter’s day in July with its blue skies and distant clouds caught my attention. The Southern Cape is a stunning area and the countryside between the Langeberge stretching all the way to Gouritsmond offers breathtaking vistas … I painted this as I saw it – and added with a little dam filled with enough for this farmer’s needs … with a few birds enroute to some undisclosed destination.
“Version 1 of a 3-part exercise in brushing up on the techniques I utilize in my paintings. I won’t ask to ‘pardon the pun’.” (said Wesley)
“Version 2 of a 3-part exercise in brushing up on the techniques I utilize in my paintings.” (Wesley)
“Version 3 of a 3-part exercise in brushing up on the techniques I utilize in my paintings.” (Wesley)
“The paintings in this series were completed during a visit to family in the scenic Southern Cape of South Africa. My dad (www.artist-barryodendaal.co.za) and I took on the project, and each completed three paintings during my visit. After each version was completed, we would take notes on what improvements or changes we would make in the next.”
“As with previous studies where multiple versions of the same topic were completed, I enjoyed the learning process and was quite satisfied with the variations of the final products.”
“There was no real planning done to set the scene. As usual, I improvised these scenes from a general concept I had in my head. Each bush and every mountain top came straight from the artist’s imagination, and now have their place on a canvas.” (said Wesley)

Once again I used the “wet-on-wet” technique. This second painting in our short series of three, was done with my son Wesley (www.artist-wesleyodendaal.co.za) doing his own 2nd version as we again shared studio space during a very special visit of this amazing guy – I call “my son”. This time we worked with no. 1 in mind … but completely working from the heart.
Once again I used the “wet-on-wet”. The painting was done with my son Wesley (www.artist-wesleyodendaal.co.za) doing his own version as we shared studio space during a very special visit of this amazing guy – I call “my son”. We attempted a bit of a practice session with Bob … and completed from the heart.
The setting was a scene alongside the Knysna Lagoon – which forms part of the picturesque & internationally renowned Garden Route of the Western Cape Coast in South Africa.

Depicting the quiet country lifestyle so many people long for … a dirt road running out past some Silver Birch trees and a nearby cabin overlooking distant hills…
